What to Wear (or Not Wear) in a Sauna

What to Wear (or Not Wear) in a Sauna

If you’re new to sauna life, one of the most common questions is also one of the simplest: what should you wear in a sauna? The answer depends on the type of sauna, whether it’s public or private, and your own comfort level. Here’s a quick guide to help you sweat smarter.

Private Sauna? You’ve Got Options.

If you're using your own outdoor sauna at home—like one of our handcrafted Honey Hut saunas—you have more freedom to do things your way. That said, some outfits (or lack thereof) work better than others.

  • Nothing at all: The most traditional choice in many cultures. It allows your skin to breathe and prevents damp clothing from trapping heat. Just be sure to sit on a towel for hygiene and comfort.
  • Swimsuit: A common pick for mixed-company sessions. Choose a loose-fitting, natural-fiber suit if possible—tight synthetic materials can trap heat and irritate skin.
  • Cotton towel or wrap: Lightweight, breathable, and easy to remove. Perfect if you want coverage without sacrificing airflow.

What *Not* to Wear in a Sauna

  • Shoes or sandals: Leave them outside. Saunas should be clean, barefoot zones.
  • Workout gear: Leggings, compression shirts, and synthetic fabrics don’t breathe and can actually hold heat against your body—causing discomfort or even overheating.
  • Jewelry: Metal heats up quickly and can burn your skin. Best to leave it off entirely.
  • Lotions or oils: Not clothing, but still important. Avoid using them before your session—heat can cause irritation or clog your pores.

Public Sauna? Know the Norms

If you’re visiting a spa or gym, rules can vary. In Europe, nudity is often the norm. In the U.S., most public saunas encourage swimsuits or towels for modesty. When in doubt, check the facility's guidelines—or just follow what everyone else is doing.
